We are aware that some people with Albinism have received shielding letters from their GP’s and we have had specific queries on this issue.

The clinical advice that we have received is that Albinism in isolation is not associated with compromised immunity and that there would be no reason to shield in these cases.

There are some syndromic forms of Albinism eg Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome and Chediak-Higashi Syndrome, which are associated with compromised immunity. We expect that people with these conditions would already be aware of this/or have been notified by the UK Government that they are in the vulnerable group for Covid-19.

If you have any doubts as to whether you or your child falls into these groups or you would like to discuss any shielding letters you have received in more detail, please contact your GP for further guidance.
